It’s been too long since our last post, so I wanted to send out an update on some of our upcoming events. Next weekend, I’ll be filling in for Francisco at the Flourish open source conference in Chicago. I’ll be talking about the Cappuccino project, the evolution of the code and the community, and about building a business around open source. If you’re in the Chicago area March 19th or 20th, stop on by, the conference is Free!

Next month, Francisco will be talking at JSConf US 2010. Following on last year’s hit conference in DC and the successful follow up in Berlin this fall, JSConf 2010 promises to be a hit event. Tom and I will also be making cameo appearances and will likely be giving talks in the alternate track.

And the last announcement for now is that we’ll be repeating our presence at Google IO this year. We’ll be showing off some cool new ways to integrate with Google services. The conference is already sold out, but if you’re going to be there be sure to stop by the developer sandbox and say hi!

Finally, I’ll be giving a keynote address on developer tools, with a focus on some of the exciting new tools coming out soon.

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Nick Small and I’m the newest member of the 280 North team. I started using Objective-J and Cappuccino the day they launched, and recently, Ross, Tom, and Francisco have hired me to help maintain and update 280 Slides. I’m working on some new features and updates, and I’ll also be helping respond to feedback and email. Finally, I’ll be posting here whenever there are updates to 280 Slides.

I look forward to helping improve 280 Slides to make it greater than it already is and working with the great team at 280 North. Also, please feel free to let me know if you have any issues with anything!

Nick Small

This week we announced our next product, called Atlas, at the Future of Web Apps conference in Miami.

Atlas is a visual development tool for creating web applications using the Cappuccino framework. The best way to explain Atlas is to show it:

Think Vitamin has an article discussing Atlas in more detail.

We’re really excited about the ways Atlas could change the process of developing web applications. Atlas will allow developers to worry less about boilerplate user interface and glue code, just as the Cappuccino framework gives developers many common features expected by users, letting them focus on the ones specific to their applications.

Furthermore, Atlas allows non-programmers, such as many graphic designers, to join in on the process of actually building an application, rather than just providing mockups that must then be replicated in code by a developer.

Atlas will be available this summer. Sign up for updates on 280atlas.com and we’ll let you know of the progress on Atlas.

We don’t want to repeat ourselves too much across this blog and our new one, but this news is too important to pass up.

Cappuccino, our web application framework built in Objective-J and modeled after Cocoa, is now available as an open source project at http://cappuccino.org!

Francisco said it best:

We’re open sourcing this technology because we sincerely want to be part of a world where there are more high quality web applications like 280 Slides. We’ll be putting a lot of resources into Cappuccino in the future, and we plan to build a strong open source community around the development platform. We can’t wait to see where you take this with us.

Techcrunch also posted a great write-up.

Cappuccino is how we built 280 Slides, and it’s going to change the way people build web applications. So, head on over to cappuccino.org and get started building your own app!

After working on it (and not) for weeks, we’re finally launching our new web site at http://280north.com. The site will be our company home, and will host up to date information on all the projects we’re working on, including 280 Slides and Cappuccino.

The 280 North Blog has been redesigned to fit in with the new site, including an overhaul of the comment system, which is now powered by Disqus (a fellow YC company).

The site itself is brand new, so we’ll be continuing to update and improve it. If you find any bugs, don’t hesitate to send them to us.

We owe plenty of thanks to our friends at MetaLab Design. They helped us with 280slides.com and 280north.com, and are really top notch designers. I strongly recommend them.

I’d also like to give a belated thank you to Miles Ponson, who made many of the graphics for 280 Slides, including the main icon.
